Precision Tank Assessments
EEMUA 159 Compliance Through 3D Scanning

The Requirement

Our client contacted us after an NDT report flagged three storage tanks as failing verticality checks. The assessment was carried out using a plumb line, which can be unreliable. To avoid taking the tanks out of service—at a potential cost of £120k+/—they needed a more precise verification method.

We conducted a 3D laser scan to capture the as-built condition of each tank. Long-range scans recorded the full shell, while short-range scans focused on the annular plate. The cleaned data was compared against a perfect cylinder, producing a heat map of deviations. From this, we extracted vertical and radial cuts, along with detailed annular plate analysis, providing the client with clear data to assess the extent of any movement.
SPEED
Using 3D scanning technology, we can survey two 30m tanks and a 20m tank in a single day, with reports generated within 24 hours. This efficiency gives engineers a clear, immediate understanding of EEMUA 159 compliance.

Neonex Digital’s team worked quickly and efficiently on site, providing a fast initial analysis while we awaited the full report. Their services will now be a standard procedure for tanks with verticality concerns.
