Ever wondered how modern P&IDs are built using real-world site data? In this behind-the-scenes breakdown, we walk through how our team uses point cloud data captured from laser scans to create intelligent, structured Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).

This is the real-world process of turning raw site scans into valuable engineering documentation.

The Three-Part Process to Build P&IDs from Point Clouds

We combine powerful tools and digital workflows to deliver accurate, data-rich diagrams. Here’s how it works:

1. Cintoo: Visual Twin for Point Cloud Navigation

We start with 3D laser scans of the site, uploaded and managed in Cintoo. This platform lets us:

  • Navigate point cloud data in a browser
  • Tag, comment, and collaborate in real-time
  • Visually inspect pipelines, valves, and equipment from scan data
  • Plan out documentation without returning to site

This stage ensures we have an accurate digital twin of the process area—accessible to engineers, stakeholders, and CAD teams alike.

2. Autodesk Plant 3D: Smart P&ID Authoring

Next, we move into Autodesk Plant 3D to begin building the Smart P&ID. This software lets us:

  • Use spec-driven tools to select correct components
  • Automatically manage line data, flow direction, and asset tags
  • Maintain traceability through off-page connectors and asset reports
  • Link P&ID elements to 3D model components

With Smart P&ID functionality, the diagram isn’t just a drawing—it’s a live database that supports compliance, asset management, and design workflows.

3. Building the P&ID: Data, Structure, and Delivery

Finally, we bring it all together. The data from Cintoo guides the layout and component selection in Plant 3D. From here, we:

  • Accurately represent existing plant conditions
  • Assign correct service lines and instrumentation
  • Export P&IDs in client-specific formats (PDF, DWG, databases)
  • Link supporting documents like datasheets and safety files

This is how we build P&IDs that are not only compliant but usable—whether for design upgrades, maintenance planning, or audits.

Why This Matters for Process Sites

Using point cloud data to build P&IDs:

  • Eliminates repeat site visits
  • Enhances accuracy with real-world measurements
  • Accelerates documentation timelines
  • Integrates with digital twins and asset registers
  • Supports long-term plant safety and compliance
