P&ID instrumentation refers to the measurement and control devices represented on a Piping & Instrumentation Diagram. These tools are essential for tracking and regulating key process variables—like pressure, flow, level, and temperature—throughout an industrial facility.
Instrumentation ensures that processes run safely, efficiently, and within design limits. On a P&ID, this layer of detail is what turns basic pipework into a functional and controlled system.
Instrumentation can be broadly classified into two categories: field-mounted and remote.
Field-mounted instrumentation includes devices installed directly at or near the process. These are typically mounted on tanks, pipelines, pumps, or vessels, and are exposed to the real operating environment—sometimes harsh or hazardous.
These instruments are drawn directly on the P&ID and usually tagged with an identifier such as PT-101 (Pressure Transmitter), LT-202 (Level Transmitter), etc.

Remote instrumentation involves devices that are located away from the process—typically in control rooms, instrument shelters, or electrical rooms. These systems gather data from field instruments and manage control responses automatically or manually.
On a P&ID, remote instrumentation may be shown on a separate control panel symbol or connected to field devices via signal lines.

Without instrumentation, a P&ID is simply a pipework diagram. It’s the sensors, transmitters, and controllers that bring the system to life—allowing operators to:
However, capturing and documenting this information can be a major challenge—especially on legacy sites. That’s why many P&IDs are missing full instrumentation detail.
At Neonex Digital, our E&I engineers collaborate closely with your team on-site to locate, validate, and correctly represent instrumentation on your P&IDs—so they’re not just compliant, but genuinely useful.
